The last season of the record champions Ajax was far from satisfying and with the 5th place at the end of the season at least the team qualify for the Europa League. In their first match Ajax will face Serbian representative Vojvodina Novi Sad. The game will take place on Thursday in the Johan Cruijff Arena. Even though Ajax was certainly among the best in the Eredivisie last season, the squad net is currently still worth over €256 million. This explains, among other things, the starting position in this match. The Serbian representative squad is valued around €18 million. According to the bookmakers Ajax are firm favorites to progress from this clash. Ajax Amsterdam had to endure numerous low points last season. Last autumn, the club fell to last place in the league table for the first time in its history. They were also knocked out of the cup by fourth-tier amateur club Hercules from Utrecht. Things then started to look up again under new coach John van't Schip. With three wins and two draws from their last five matches, Ajax managed to finish in 5th place. Vojvodina on the other hand, have only managed to get past one round in five attempts in the UEFA competitions since 2017.
